Cockroaches are typically dark brown in color and as long as 1-inches in length. Cockroaches get confused with bed bugs during their nymph stage. The most common types of cockroaches in the U.S. are the American and German cockroach. The American cockroach is brown to reddish brown with a maximum size of 2.1 inches. The German cockroach is pale brown and about 1 inch in size.  Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, 6 kinds of parasitic worms and at least 7 other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces.

German cockroaches prefer to live in warm, humid places close to food and moisture sources. They are frequently found in residential and commercial kitchen environments, and bathrooms. General pest control methods are vital in controlling this pest.
